FIT/One Würzburg Baskets avoided a slip-up as they fight to stay in the race for the playoff by rolling past last-placed BG Göttingen 97-80 on the road. Würzburg took control in the first quarter and never looked back in moving to 13-12 after having lost three of their last four games. Davion Mintz was Würzburg’s main weapon with 21 points and Aubrey Dawkins led a major output from the bench with 20 points. Göttingen meanwhile are still waiting for the second win in losing their 16th straight game for a 1-23 record despite Tra Holder scoring 16 points.

Game Summary: Würzburg hit two three-pointers to lead 14-6 and then was able to get out on the break in an 11-2 surge to pull ahead 26-15. And the guests were up 30-18 after 10 minutes. Hannes Steinbach opened the second quarter with a three-point play and the cushion grew to 15 points, 33-18, and 12 straight points increased the gap to 24 points 47-23. The advantage was as many as 26 points before Würzburg were leading 55-31 at the break.
Göttingen managed to get the gap down to 21 points - 57-36 - but the hosts were not able to really challenge Würzburg. The advantage grew to 27 points - 68-41 - and Würzburg were up 75-51 after three quarters. The margin was still 24 points with 2 minutes left as Würzburg were never challenged.

Numbers Please: Würzburg out-rebounded Göttingen 45-30 while shooting 61 percent on two-pointers and scoring 19 points on fast break to just 2 for the hosts.

Player of the Game: Davion Mintz not only led Würzburg with 21 points but the also grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and grabbed 2 steals.

The Germans: Würzburg's 18-year-old Wunderkind Hannes Steinbach scored 17 points - just 2 off his career high - to go with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. At the other end, Kostja Mushidi scored 14 points and Göttingen's 19-year-old center Janis Jünemann started his second game of the season - following Round 16 against Basketball Löwen Braunschweig in January after the departure of star big man Demajeo Wiggins. The youngster scored a career high 11 points while also picking up 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in just 12:29 minutes. Mathis Mönninghoff meanwhile chippped in 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the loss.

Bench did the heavy lifting: Würzburg's starters took a back seat to the bench players in this game as the reserves finished with 60 of the 97 points. Aubrey Dawkins scored 20 points, Mike Lewis had 18 points and Hannes Steinbach came off the bench for 17 points while the league's leading scorer Jhivvan Jackson tied his season low with just 4 points though he dished out 6 assists.

What's Up Next: Göttingen will not have to wait long for another chance to win as they host Veolia Towers Hamburg in a Round 3 makeup game on Wednesday April 9. Then they travel to Basketball Löwen Braunschweig on Saturday April 12. Würzburg face a tough test in their next game, hosting ratiopharm ulm on Monday April 14.
